ChemInform Abstract

The Na-Te system has been investigated in liquid NH3 by UV-VIS spectroscopy and elemental analysis of the isolated products. Na2Te2 and Na2Te3 are found to be stable in liquid NH3. An intermediate species, which may be NaTe, is formed during the sequential reaction of elemental Na and Te, and is suggested to be a precursor of Na2Te. Na2Te is either insoluble in NH3 or does not absorb in the UV-VISregion. No polytelluride higher than Na2Te3 is formed under the conditions used.
