ChemInform Abstract
Attempts to prepare ternary pyridoxylidene amino-acid Schiff base metal complexes resulted in the novel oxidation of pyridoxal to pyridoxic acid or its γ-lactone. Thus the complexes (I)-(III) are obtained from 1:1:1:1 mixtures of Cu(NO3)2 or Cu(ClO4)2, pyridoxal hydrochloride, bipyridine and amino-acids (L-histidine, DL-alanine, glycine) in water or 1:1-water-EtOH (no yields given) and characterized by X-ray investigations. (I) crystallizes in the space group P21/n with Z=4, (II) in P21/c, Z=4, and (III) in P1, Z=2. Both the ligands, pyridoxic acid and the lactone, are zwitterionic and the protonated pyridine nitrogens involved in hydrogen bonding.
