Abstract

Acetophenone (Ia) and propiophenone (Ib) are converted to the lithium enolates (II) which react with diiodomethane (III) in the presence of samarium diiodide, yielding the cyclopropanols (IV).

Acetophenone (Ia) and propiophenone (Ib) are converted to the lithium enolates (II) which react with diiodomethane (III) in the presence of samarium diiodide, yielding the cyclopropanols (IV). The cyclic ketones (V), (VII), (IX), and (XII) are transformed into the cyclopropanocycloalkanols (VI), (VIII), (X), and (XI) or (XIII) in a similar manner.
