Abstract

Hydrolysis and cyclization of the ester (I) gives the thiophene counterpart (III) of isatoic anhydride, which is methylated [- (V)] and treated with the acetophenones (VI) to yield the title compounds (VII).

ChemInform Abstract

Hydrolysis and cyclization of the ester (I) gives the thiophene counterpart (III) of isatoic anhydride, which is methylated [- (V)] and treated with the acetophenones (VI) to yield the title compounds (VII). The isomers (X) are obtained by the same procedure from (VIII) via (IX). The new compounds (VII) and (X) are subjected to a wide range of screens for biological action but no significant activities are observed.
