Abstract

Oxidative cyclization of the thiosemicarbazone (I) (obtained by treatment of D-galactose with 4-(p-chlorophenyl)-thiosemicarbazide in refluxing aqueous ethanol; yield 70%) gives the title compound (II), the periodate oxidation of which affords the aldehyde (IV).

ChemInform Abstract

Oxidative cyclization of the thiosemicarbazone (I) (obtained by treatment of D-galactose with 4-(p-chlorophenyl)-thiosemicarbazide in refluxing aqueous ethanol; yield 70%) gives the title compound (II), the periodate oxidation of which affords the aldehyde (IV). The latter is converted into the compounds (V)-(X) [no yields given for (IX) and (Xa)].
