ChemInform Abstract

The thermal reaction of the Ru(II) complex (I) with PMe3 results in the formation of the trimethylphosphine Ru(0) complex (II) with a square-pyramidal geometry in which PMe3 occupies the apical position. Displacement of PMe3 by CO occurs at 25°C producing the trigonal-bipyramidal derivative (III). Neopentyl isocyanide slowly displaces PMe3 at higher temp. to give the isocyanide derivative (IV). Molecular and crystal structures of (II) (space group Pnam, Z=4) and (III) (space group Pbca, Z=16) are determined by X-ray analysis. On the basis of kinetic data, the mechanism of PMe3 Substitution is discussied. (II) undergoes associative substitution with CO but dissociative Substitution with other larger ligands.
