My motto is In scientific research, it is important to never reach a steady state.
When I was eighteen I wanted to be a scientist. It did not matter whether I became a chemist or physicist. So I eventually chose engineering as it had ingredients of everything.
I am waiting for the day when someone will discover a weather machine. I wanted to develop this when I was a kid.
Young people should study chemistry because it is the closest you will ever get to become a wizard. Chemistry is truly magical!
My favorite drink is Belgian beer. My top three are Westmalle Tripel, Cornet, and Tripel Karmeliet.
The most significant historic event of the past 100 years was the founding of the European Union.
If I could be anyone for a day, I would be Tom Boonen winning the Tour of Flanders in 2012.
My favorite saying is know thyself. (You can only be strong if you know your weaknesses.)
I admire anyone who is passionate about what they are doing.
I advise my students to never give up and keep believing in themselves.
If I had one year of paid leave I would still be in the lab, focusing on science.
The principal aspects of my personality are passion, enthusiasm, and the fact that I never give up.
My favorite books are the Harry Potter series (J. K. Rowling), The Shadow of the Wind (Carlos Ruiz Zafón), and The Cicero Trilogy (Robert Harris).
