Abstract

It is shown for different examples of microorganisms growth in continuous flow culture the influence of process variables (temperature, H+-concentration and changes of the chemical composition of fermentation medium) on the coefficients of maintenance and substrate consumption.

The maintenance coefficient is increased exponentially with increasing temperature or H+-concentration.

The minimum maintenance coefficient is obtained when the growth rate is limited by carbon sources.

Other growth limitations or change of chemical composition in the medium lead to rising of maintenance coefficient but not in each case to increasing of specific C-substrate consumption at lower residence time, especially.
