Summary

Laboratory personnel must have the appropriate education and training for the responsibilities they undertake, and they must also possess integrity and professionalism. This chapter discusses the personnel required for clinical microbiology laboratories to operate, as well as the qualifications and responsibilities for each role. Just as the personnel required for a clinical laboratory differ by the complexity of testing performed in the laboratory, the requirements for laboratory personnel also vary depending on test complexity. To ensure that a clinical laboratory is able to produce accurate, reliable, and timely test results on an ongoing basis, the laboratory personnel must be assessed for their proficiency and ability to successfully carry out their roles. Laboratory personnel are responsible for providing updated documentation to laboratory management when, for example, certification is renewed, or additional education is completed. Personnel are also responsible for providing records and documentation in a timely manner when requested by laboratory management or HR.
