Intelligent Design
Abstract
Although advocates of Intelligent Design distinguish their project from other styles of creationism, it is clearly the latest incarnation in an old tradition. Intelligent Design proponents argue that “the deep structures of life” cannot be explained by natural selection and random mutation – the hallmarks of evolutionary theory – and must be explained, rather, by some force of willful design (Behe 1996). Some living organisms, such as the inner workings of the cell and the complexity of the eye, are so intricate, according to this formulation, that they require a creative intelligent force to have set them in motion.
