Abstract

Cultural hybridity is a contested idea that has been understood in essentialist and nonessentialist terms. It has been used to describe the experiences of ethnic youth and biracial individuals who have similar, but different experiences of living across multiple cultures. The development of a hybrid consciousness transcends these differences because living in-between fosters an alternative worldview not available to those living on either side of the cultural border.
