This chapter describes the key theoretical perspectives involved in ethical decision-making in health professions education research (HPER). It explains the scope and role of Institutional Review Boards and Human Research Ethics Committees. The chapter outlines the key ethical considerations in human research. It discusses issues of research integrity and how to maintain this in HPE researchers' work. The chapter evaluates the range of ethical issues when publishing the research. Ethics in research is the ‘framework for creating a fabric of integrity’. Ethical considerations occur across all stages of research including design, applying for funding, data collection and analysis, dissemination, quality appraisals, and peer review. Appreciating ethical perspectives is key to doing ethical research. Codes of conduct comprise institutional guidelines developed to ensure that researchers have clarity in how they should conduct their research, both in terms of virtues and actions.
