Summary

This chapter conceptualises publishing as a multifaceted research dissemination process in health professions education research (HPER). It focuses on different forms of research dissemination in HPER. The chapter summarises common approaches in preparing the HPER for dissemination. It describes HPER dissemination processes via conferences, peer-reviewed journals, and alternative formats, from submission to final decision. The chapter introduces four case studies and discusses them in detail to illustrate research publication journeys. Conference presentations offer opportunities to introduce the recent HPER to peers. In addition to conferences, journal articles are the most common way for HPE researchers to disseminate findings. Some of the types of publishing include: visual abstracts, writing blogs, podcasts, designing infographics, producing video animations, creating comics, writing poems, developing websites, and engaging in social media activities. Planning is key to success, as a journal article might not always be the best and most appropriate mode of dissemination.
