Chapter 3

Who Would Prevail Today from Lamarck or Darwin to Help the Controlled Evolution of 4D Printing?

Summary

This chapter deals with the control of temporal evolution, a parallel with natural processes and associated theories is made, allowing a comparison and the emergence of some action points. Transposing the reality as experienced by the authors with its possible biases of understanding is to remake a little the history of hopes associated with these new processes of additive manufacturing which could, in case of success, populate or even invade our daily life in a few years. An organized being is not merely a machine, for the machine possesses only adriving force; but the organized being possesses a formative force. There are already “advanced” computational techniques that have been developed for this purpose: multi-scale approaches, parallel approaches ; enrichment methods, etc. Darwinian evolution translates, as far as 4D printing processes are concerned, into continuous mechanical processes of adaptation. According to Lamarck's theory, the organism reacts to environmental influences and adapts.
