Summary

This chapter addresses radio frequency (RF) and radio resource management (RRM) aspects of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN). The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has defined as part of its Release-17, a number of enhancing features enabling 5G New Radio (5G NR), Narrowband Internet of things, and enhanced Machine Type Communication radio interfaces to support NTN. While these radio protocols are band agnostics, 3GPP defines the RF and the RRM requirements associated with a specific frequency band. 3GPP has defined a reference architecture for satellite networks. For all the bands introduced in 3GPP for NTN, the definition of the minimum RF characteristics and minimum transmission and reception performance requirements of both Satellite Access Node and User Equipment at the NR-Uu interface, shall not impact the existing 3GPP RF specifications applicable to bands already defined for NR and Long Term Evolution.
