Ocular trauma

First published: 18 August 2021

Summary

Traumatic eye injuries are common and may occur as isolated injuries or part of more complex patterns of maxillofacial or multisystem trauma. Prehospital evaluation should focus primarily on standard trauma protocols treating significant life-threatening injuries first, and identification and stabilization of any associated eye injuries thereafter. Important points include a thorough history, including mechanism of injury, the substance or material involved, and any treatment rendered in the field. Most eye injuries are minor and require little more than supportive care, recognizing that significant chemical exposures, penetrating trauma, traumatic hyphema, and corneal injuries require more extensive emergent ophthalmological evaluation.
