Renal failure and dialysis

Summary

The prevalence of chronic renal disease and people dependent on renal dialysis is growing in North American society. Such patients are engaging the EMS system with increasing frequency, at times with life-threatening consequences of their renal disease. Understanding the variety of diseases and treatment modalities helps prehospital clinicians provide better care in the field for acute and end-stage renal disease. As complications of dialysis are common and can be severe, recognition and management become crucial to effective EMS practice.
