The Media Strikes Back

First published: 02 January 2012

Summary

The press had been so caught up in the excitement about President Obama's election that the only opposition coverage it provided was of a demoralized Republican Party. Concerned columnists advised the Republicans what was really needed to make a comeback. In conservative and libertarian circles, it is widely claimed that most journalists and outlets in the news media are biased toward the left in varying degrees. Due to the size and scope of the tea parties on April 15th, it was nearly impossible for the local and national media to ignore them. Rather than cover the events accurately, however, many outlets, commentators, and hosts attempted to undermine the events. The tea parties were about the growth of government and fiscal irresponsibility. FOX News, chided by some as promoting the events, saw a dramatic jump in viewership during the tea parties. Other networks’ ratings, already limping behind FOX News, stayed relatively static or dipped. CNN gained a moderate bump on tax day, going up almost 30,000 viewers over one week earlier. This was an interesting example of the market reacting to a desirable product.
