Summary

Kidney supportive care is care aimed at improving the quality of life for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) throughout the continuum of their illness. This chapter summarizes the evidence surrounding the epidemiology and impact of symptoms in patients with CKD, and outlines general approaches and tools to assess and manage the symptom burden. It is generally assumed that patients with end-stage kidney disease who start dialysis will experience a substantial improvement in physical and psychological well being. Symptom clusters refer to concurrent symptoms related to each other. Systemic inflammation is felt to contribute to many of the symptoms experienced by patients with CKD. There are several aspects of symptom screening and assessment worth consideration. Symptom assessment and management is an integral component of quality care for patients with advanced CKD.
