Summary

This chapter focuses on the approach to dialysis modality selection, patient education, and preparation for specific modalities. It is widely known and accepted that end-stage kidney disease is a noncommunicable disease with global impact and public health importance. Management of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) can be complicated given that at early stages CKD is usually an asymptomatic condition. Patient education is a process and should begin from the time when the physician reveals the diagnosis, which should be delivered at the patient's pace of understanding with empathy and conveyance of hope. The optimal time to initiate maintenance dialysis is currently unknown; many patients are vulnerable during this transition period as it has been reported that the majority of patients are unprepared and ill-informed about commencing dialysis.
