Abstract

The massive expansion of imprisonment in the United States at the end of the twentieth century heralded the rise of a growing global penal apparatus that has impacted the lives of millions of the planet's most vulnerable peoples. In response, growing social movements seek to foreground social justice efforts at decarceration, abolition, and alternatives to imprisonment.
