Drag kings are people (mostly queer women and transmen) who perform masculinity (and sometimes femininity) on stage. In addition to performing masculinity on stage, many kings also embody masculinity in their everyday lives, and some identify as transmen. In a Euro-American context, drag king performances began to emerge en masse in the 1990s and mostly took place in gay and lesbian bars. While some drag kings perform individually, many perform in troupes and do group numbers, and while some are focused solely on entertainment, others see their performances as activism. Drag king culture historically has been understood as a subculture of LGBT culture, but with the increase of mainstream movie roles for drag king performers and gender-bending performances by artists like Lady Gaga, it has received more attention in popular culture.
