Summary

Since its emergence in the mid-1970s, percutaneous nephrolithotomy has been used to successfully treat large and complex stones in the collecting system, including staghorn calculi. In this chapter, we review the literature and discuss our institutional experience with intracorporeal lithotripsy for this procedure. We review commonly used intracorporeal lithotrites and their mechanisms of action, and discuss comparative studies evaluating lithotripter performance. We discuss some surgical techniques using several of the lithotripters and provide an approach to intraoperative trouble-shooting.
