Australia

Summary

While the Internet has largely neutralized the tyranny of distance in the communications area, Australian courts have not followed many of the trends appearing in offshore jurisdictions. Australian Media Law is moving further away from other common law jurisdictions. Since early 2006, Australia has had one Uniform Defamation Law (“UDL”) to replace the eight separate laws previously enforced across the Australian States and Territories. This is recognition that the state and territory borders are largely irrelevant to the media.
