Summary

Every province in Canada uses a common law system except Quebec, which follows civil law. Canada is a federal country, with legislative jurisdiction divided between the federal government and governments of the 10 provinces and three northern territories. Although the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is a constitutional document that applies to all levels of government, there can be considerable variation between provinces and their courts in legislation and application of laws.
