Summary

The court system in Poland is composed of trial (or common) courts and the Supreme Court. Common courts are divided into (1) district courts established for the territory of one or more local communes and, in certain circumstances, for part of the territory of a local commune; (2) regional courts established for the territory of at least two district courts; and (3) appeal courts established for the territory of at least two regional courts. The adjudication of a civil case by the relevant district or regional court depends on the subject matter and size of a claim. Poland maintains a civil law system guided by constitutional principles. In addition to the Civil Codes, Poland's Press Law of 1984 applies to all publications in Poland and requires that publications distributed in Poland register at a local court.
