Derrida ignores the fact that the idea of philosophy as fundamentally Greek is a relatively recent invention, and even though he repeatedly suggests that the questions he is posing to Levinas is not being imposed on him from the outside, it seems that Derrida succeeds in convincing Levinas to take it seriously as a potential challenge. In conversation with Richard Kearney, Derrida provides some essential background to how he sees “the historical coupling of Judaism and Hellenism.”.
