Summary

This chapter discusses gross anatomy and histology of the colon, rectum and anus with detailed description of their anatomical relationships, blood and nerve supply, lymphatic drainage and pelvic floor anatomy while keeping an emphasis on clinically relevant aspects. Embryology is presented in correlation with developmental abnormalities including anorectal malformations, malrotation and Hirschsprung's disease. Acquired conditions such as cecal volvulus, cecal bascule and sigmoid volvulus are also discussed.
