Abstract

Ethical issues that develop in biomedical engineering are outlined with focus on biomedical research. Issues including research misconduct, conflict of interest, the development of new products, animal experimentation, and clinical trials are presented, with particular focus on stem cell research and nanotechnology. The fundamentals of research ethics are also addressed. Difficulties potentially faced by biomedical engineers are addressed, with the medical point of view contrasted to the engineering point of view. Recommendations for teaching ethics to biomedical engineers and for teaching research ethics are presented.
