Abstract

Visual art is political and this role is even stronger when it is displayed as an act of political disruption. During crises, the walls on urban streets become canvases visible to everyone. The impact of having a mass audience is constrained, however, by the need for legal authorization. For most of its history, Argentina has alternated between democratic and authoritarian regimes, making street art an important aspect of the so-called “cultural battle” of social movements. Moreover, Argentinean street art represents a new alternative channel for the application of free speech.
