Neurodegeneration and Dementia
Summary
A deeper understanding of the neuroanatomy of cognition and the pathogenesis of disease has refined the definitions of both “dementia” and “neurodegeneration.” By reviewing a sampling of neurodegenerative illness, those in which the greatest scientific discovery has been made, this chapter will highlight and clarify emerging principles relevant to the category as a whole. In particular, this chapter will focus on Alzheimer's disease, frontal temporal dementia, Lewy body dementia, and prion diseases.
