Abstract

Nonlinear absorption near 1.5 μm of cobalt doped LaGaO3 crystals has been investigated. The observed dependence of transmission coefficient on incident energy density reveals a contribution of an excited state absorption. The assignment of ESA has been proposed tentatively, because a strong absorption of Co3+ prevents the location of excited levels of Co2+ which may be involved. It has been concluded that LaGaO3:Co crystal is a good candiate as a passive Q-switch for erbium lasers operating near 1.5 μm.
