The Challenges of Pharmacogenomics for Pharmacy Education, Practice, and Regulation
Summary
The patient-specificity of pharmacogenomics promises to foster the development of new patient-oriented pharmaceutical care practices and thus to enhance the value of pharmacists in drug therapy management. Pharmacists have, with frustration, long observed the “idiosyncratic” effects of usually safe and effective drugs that fail to help some patients and actually harm other patients. Pharmacists look forward to predicting patient variations in response to drugs based on individual genetic differences. Pharmacogenomics will expand the ability of pharmacists to provide drug therapy management services. It will further integrate pharmacists into the mainstream of service provision to physicians and patients.
