Abstract

Strong solid bases are effective catalysts for a wide range of organic transformations such as condensation, double-bond shift, alkylation (and alkenylation), and etherification. They also catalyze important chemical reactions that involve reagents containing heteroatoms like nitrogen, sulfur, and iodine, all of which adversely interact with solid acids. Moreover, acid–base bifunctional catalysts are used or reactions such as dehydration and hydrogenation. The focus of this article is on industrial processes that utilize solid base catalysts in the production of chemicals.
