There are many methods for the measurement of bacterial mass and concentration. Different measures reflect different characteristics of the bacterial mass, and not all measures reflect the number of viable bacteria. If direct counting and characterization of individual bacterial cells is not possible or feasible, indirect methods must be used. Determination of the “most probable number” and serial dilution assays are indirect methods intended to reflect the number of viable bacteria.
