ABSTRACT
Purpose
Changes in jawbone shape and size during the initial 3 months post-extraction critically affect therapeutic outcomes, both functionally and aesthetically. The gum shape should be altered as little as possible compared to its pre-removal state after implant insertion. A key goal of dental implant therapy is to replicate the gingival contour around the natural tooth, prevent food entrapment, and improve overall aesthetics. So the purpose of this systematic review is to assess the effect of conventional healing abutment and socket seal abutment on the changes in peri-implant soft tissues in the maxillary and mandibular posterior region in immediate implant cases.
Materials and Methods
PubMed, Google Scholar, Proquest, Science Direct and Cochrane Central were searched for studies published from 1 January 2012 to 30 April 2024. Cross-references and hand searches were also conducted. The review included randomised and non-randomised trials, conventional gingival former with socket seal abutment on the changes in soft tissue surrounding implants placed immediately. Studies were evaluated and systematically classified as high, medium, or low.
Results
The search approach identified 139,480 publications. After reviewing headings and summaries, 228 papers remained and were further assessed through full-text evaluation. At last, five studies satisfied the inclusion criteria for the systematic analysis.
Conclusion
Socket seal abutments in immediate implants preserve ideal peri-implant mucosa. Additional well-designed randomised controlled clinical studies with greater participant numbers are suggested to enhance the evidence.
Conflicts of Interest
