[ Anterior shoulder dislocation. ]

The shoulder is the most commonly dislocated joint. Shoulder dislocation accounts for more than half of all joint complications treated in the emergency department. The incidence of shoulder dislocation is 17 per 100,000. Anterior dislocation of the shoulder is the most common type and accounts for 95% of all shoulder dislocations. Closed reduction is usually successful and can be achieved using the scapular manipulation technique.

This instructional video (Video Clip S1) demonstrates successful reduction of an anterior shoulder dislocation using the scapular manipulation technique in an adult male patient. The video was filmed at The Center for Simulation Technology and Academic Research (CSTAR; http://www.cstarweb.com) in Evanston, Illinois. We have created a series of videos to instruct our practitioners on a variety of emergent lifesaving procedures using a variety of high-fidelity simulators and host these videos on a website for emergency medicine practitioners to access and review.
