Electron Microscopic Studies on the Basal Apparatus of the Flagellum in the Protozoon, Leishmania donovani
Abstract
SYNOPSIS. The basal apparatus of the flagella and kinetoplast in Leishmania donovani have been studied with the electron microscope. The flagellar fibrils extend into the body of the protozoan to form the kinetosome. At the point of origin of the flagellum, the pellicle invaginates to form a kinetosomal vacuole around the kinetosome. The kinetoplast is formed by a transversely elongated banded structure, surrounded at some distance by a double layered kinetoplast membrane. There is no apparent connection between the kinetosome and the kinetoplast.
