Abstract

The inadequacy of the CIE (1931) Standard Observer for the comparison of near whites is discussed, and the adaptation of the Harrison colorimeter to obviate this difficulty is described. Greater instrumental sensitivity is achieved and measurements agree well with visual observation when whites that vary in a regular manner are compared. For random variations in tone, personal preference can probably not be related to colour measurement.
