Shao, J.-C., Hamano, Y. & Fuller, M. D., 2007. Representation of the main geomagnetic field using Maxwell's theory of poles (Geophys. J. Int.,169, 91–99)

We wish to correct the following misprints and errors in Shao et al. (2007).

  • (i)

r 0 defined in eq. (1), which also appears in eqs (2)–(6), should be the radius of the earth's surface and is not ‘the radius of the core.’

  • (ii)

The terms (r0/r)−(l+1) in eq. (1) should be (r0/r)(l+1). The terms (r0/r)−2(l+2) in eqs (2) and (6) should be (r0/r)2(l+2).

  • (iii)

    In the second column immediately below Fig. 3 the text says ‘E0 decreases by about 6.91 × 108 (nT2) over a period of 195 yr and reaches a minimum 2.77 × 108 (nT2) in 1785’. The text ‘2.77 × 108 (nT2)’ should be ‘2.77 × 109 (nT2)’.

We also wish to add another general reference by Winch & Malin (1969), who calculated the multipole parameters up to degree 5 for a limited range of epochs.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We thank Dr Frank Lowes (University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne) for pointing out these problems to us.
