Abstract

en

The anomalously amplitude-dependent internal friction peak (P1 peak) appeared around room temperature in cold-worked Al-0.1wt% Cu is stabilized by suitable thermo-mechanical treatments. The activation energy H associated with this peak is carefully determined for the first time, to H = (0.8 ± 0.1) eV with τ0 = (10−14to 10−12) s. This is close to the activation energy associated with pipe diffusion (0.70 to 0.84 eV), and thus gives strong support to previous proposition that this peak is originating from the short-range diffusion of solute atoms (Cu) along dislocation kinks in aluminium.
