Controlled synthesis of water-soluble, thermo/pH-responsive poly(;2-(;dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate-ran-9-(;4-vinylbenzyl)-9H-carbazole) (;poly(;DMAEMA-ran-VBK)) copolymers and block copolymers with poly(;N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (;poly(;DMAEMAran-VBK)-b-poly(;DMAA)) is accomplished by nitroxide mediated radical polymerization (;NMP), as presented on page 5270 by Benoît Lessard and Milan Marić . VBK not only serves as the controlling co-monomer for the BlocBuilder mediated NMP of the methacrylate, but also imparts tunable fluorescence. The copolymers exhibit tunable lower critical solution temperatures (;LCSTs) by manipulation of solution pH and copolymer composition. 1H NMR spectroscopy reveals that the VBK units of the random copolymers tend to segregate to the interior of the copolymer aggregates as the LCST is approached. In contrast, block copolymers form micelles as the LCST is approached.
