Abstract

We present a constitutive model for microbial biofilms with application to biofilms of Pseudomonas aeruginosa whose EPS contain large amounts of alginate. The EPS matrix is modelled as a transient network of worm-like chains with different types of junctions. The implementation as a nearly incompressible material allows large strain finite element calculations. (© 2012 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)
