Abstract

Magnesium ion catalysed isomerization of humulone leads to a mixture of two stereo-isomeric isohumulones without detectable formation of side-products or degradation products. Catalytically-produced isohumulone consists of 45 ± 4% cisisohumulone (colourless crystals m.p. 64° C; [α]20D =-8·9°) and of 55 ± 4% trans-isohumulone (yellow oil).
