ChemInform Abstract

Single crystals of the title compound are obtained as byproduct in the synthesis of La2Te(SiO4) by reaction of La, TeO2, and SiO2 in a CsCl flux (evacuated quartz tube, 950 °C, 7 d). La2Si2O7 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/c with Z = 12. The structure consists of alternating layers of SiO44- anions and horseshoe-shaped Si4O1310- catena-tetrasilicate ions. The highly coordinated La3+ cations (CN = 9—11) are located within and between these layers. The structure is compared with those of other catena-tetrasilicates and structural relationships to borosilicates of type Ln3[BSiO6][SiO4] are discussed.
