The cyclization of vinyl halide substituted β-lactams (Ia) and (Ib) is efficiently achieved under the conditions shown. No reaction is observed with (Ic). In this case, generation of Pd(0) prior to addition of K2CO3 as the base is necessary to obtain the desired (III) in good to excellent yield.
