ChemInform Abstract

β-Lactams (I) and (V) having propargylic carbonate and phosphate side chains undergo facile Pd-catalyzed cyclization to afford carbapenem derivatives. In the presence of a bidentate ligand such as dppf, the propargylic benzoate (Ia) gives a carbacepham (III) instead of a carbapenem.
