The stereoselective synthesis of ribosyl derivatives of penciclovir [cf. (X)] and 6-deoxypenciclovir [cf. (XI)] as potential prodrugs of penciclovir is accomplished using the efficient formation of cyclic acetal (III) from tetraacetyl-aldehydo-D-ribose (I) and the 1,3-diol (II) as the key step.
