ChemInform Abstract

The disilane (I) reacts with paraformaldehyde and various primary amine types to give the title compounds in moderate to good yields via a double aminomethylation—desilylation process. Some transformations of products (IVa), (VIa), and (VIb) are studied. Attempted oxidation of (IVa) with O3 or NaIO4/RuCl3 leads only to complex mixtures. In contrast to the behavior of the homologue (VIb), reaction of nitrile (VIa) with organometal compounds (XIV) and (XVI) is unsuccessful and affords the dealkylated piperidine (XX) instead.
