ChemInform Abstract

The voids of 3DOM samples of SiO2, Al2O3, and ZrO2, obtained by sol—gel methods from (MeO)4Si, (BuO)3Al, and Zr(OAc)4, resp., are filled with solvents of various refractive indices. The samples are investigated by diffuse reflectance UV/VIS spectroscopy. They show strong, predictable, and tailorable color changes dependend on the refractive index of the void-filling material. It is suggested that these materials can be used as in situ refractive index sensors for flow applications.
